You would hardly expect it, but Niek loves to be in the spotlight. Noted, only to share his inspirational story and messages with the world. Proudly, he spoke to big organisations such as Unilever, Hyundai, L’oreal, Maxwell Leadership, and Heiniken. Furthermore, Niek is often asked as a guest on TV-programmes, YouTube channels/videos and on podcasts.
When covid-19 came around, Niek’s agenda was wiped empty just like that. Before the pandemic Niek stood on stage more than 100 times a year to speak about topics such as resilience, leadership, education and healthcare. Working from home was a hard time because people were actually looking to connect with each other. Webinars (online seminars) already existed, but were not used that often. During this period, Niek successfully entered the world of webinars and creating online content. He had the opportunity to inspire big companies online.
But in 2022, when we returned to our ‘normal life’ again and everything re-opened, webinars turned out to be a ‘keeper’. Online workshops and training become anything but boring and actually turned out to be even more motivating. In May 2021, Niek, as speaker healthcare, took care of two webinars for healthcare-employees, together with Arjen Banach. Over 700 healthcare-employees attended these inspirational webinars titled ‘put the patient second’ (based on the eponymous book). The webinar was organized by PGGM&CO and IZZ, a membership-club for everyone working or has worked in healthcare.
In this practical webinar, healthcare employees learned how to put themselves first. Questions were raised like: how does your work impact your energy level? What can you do to increase your energy? How do you engage and retain your employees and what is there yet to learn from other organisations (in healthcare but also in different sectors). In addition to that, they got practical tools which they could implement in their daily routines right away. A very successful webinar that was talked about for a long time.
Tuesday March 29, 2022, Niek was a guest in the online program ‘Strong with stoma’. Getting a stoma is a life changing event. The patient will have to adapt and that requires a very strong mindset. The program, developed by ‘The Stoma Association’ and ‘Coloplast’, tries to help with that. As stoma-nurse, you are an indispensable link in the communication with patients.
During this webinar, Niek as expert by experience, spoke about the importance of resilience and how patients, using the program, learn to use five themes to become more resilient in themselves, improving their quality of life.

In 2010 Niek’s life turns into a living hell, to put it mildly. On July, 16th he crashes his motorcycle and suffers a spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Plus something extra: he has a syrinx, a cavity within the spinal cord that continuously threatens the body parts that do still work. According to Niek, paraplegia and a syrinx are the perfect combination for only the toughest guys. But as long as you can live with it, you’d better do so, he says. And in that case, you’d better do it good. Accepting his accident, Niek now feels the spinal cord injury changed his life for the better. He met the love of his life, is proud dad of three beautiful daughters and by helping others, he gained a sense of purpose.
Niek pitiful? Heck, no! With unstoppable energy Niek knows how to transform his suffering to something else: resilience. Mr. Featherforce was born! The heavy pains in the morning are still there, as well as the 37 pills per day, but he knows how to transform a terrible event into love, courage, perseverance, humor and success. Niek helps and inspires a wide variety of audiences in topics as customer-focus, leadership and dealing with change for more than 12 years already.
